It seems that a lot of people in America do not like guns. And that’s OK; this is America where differing opinions are not only permitted, but encouraged. No one is going to force anyone to use a gun if they don’t want to. Frankly, I think that this attitude has been promoted by a lot of bad press. A gun is a tool. Its no more dangerous than a baseball bat or a carving knife until you pick it up. The misuse of firearms is portrayed constantly in the news, but the other side, where firearms have been used to prevent crime or save lives, is given minimal coverage if at all. Life isn’t fair, I understand that. But some balance in the news, on this and on other subjects as well, would be a pleasant change.

What you say is true but I would observe that media failure to manufacture stories about tools being used for their intended purposes is hardly remarkable. Dog bites man isn't news but man bites dog is news. Similarly, a baseball bat being used to bat a ball or a carving knife being used to carve a turkey isn't news. When a bat or carving knife is used to attack a person it is news. By analogy, using a gun as a tool for its intended purpose, defense of persons or property, isn't news since that is the intended function of the tool. On the other hand, a gun used to rob a store or pistol (or revolver) whip a man is news since that is not the purpose for which the tool is manufactured.
